Background of the Study

Community health workers (CHWs) play a crucial role in the healthcare delivery system in many low- and middle-income countries, especially in rural areas with limited access to healthcare services. In Nigeria, CHWs are essential in controlling infectious diseases such as malaria, cholera, and tuberculosis, through community outreach, health education, and provision of basic medical services. Katsina State, located in northern Nigeria, has faced outbreaks of infectious diseases, where CHWs have played an instrumental role in disease prevention and management. This study will examine the effectiveness of CHWs in controlling infectious diseases in Katsina State and their contributions to public health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

In Katsina State, the prevalence of infectious diseases such as malaria, cholera, and tuberculosis remains high despite efforts to improve healthcare access. While CHWs are integral to disease control efforts, their effectiveness may be hindered by inadequate training, insufficient resources, and logistical challenges. This study aims to assess the impact of CHWs in controlling infectious diseases in Katsina State, identify the challenges they face, and propose recommendations to strengthen their role in public health interventions.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the effectiveness of community health workers in controlling infectious diseases in Katsina State.

2. To identify the challenges faced by community health workers in the implementation of infectious disease control measures.

3. To propose recommendations to enhance the role of community health workers in controlling infectious diseases in Katsina State.

Research Questions

1. How effective are community health workers in controlling infectious diseases in Katsina State?

2. What challenges do community health workers face in the control of infectious diseases in Katsina State?

3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the effectiveness of community health workers in infectious disease control in Katsina State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Community health workers in Katsina State play a significant role in reducing the prevalence of infectious diseases.

2. Inadequate training and resources are significant barriers to the effectiveness of community health workers in infectious disease control.

3. Strengthening the capacity of community health workers will lead to a reduction in the incidence of infectious diseases in Katsina State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the role of CHWs in controlling infectious diseases in both urban and rural areas of Katsina State. Limitations may include challenges in obtaining data from remote areas and potential biases in reporting the outcomes of CHW interventions.

Definitions of Terms

• Infectious Diseases: Diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including malaria, cholera, and tuberculosis, that can be transmitted from one person to another.

• Health Education: The process of educating communities about health issues to promote healthier lifestyles and disease prevention.
